My Creative Inspiration: Why painting helps me cope with chronic illness

“As music is the poetry of sound, so is painting the poetry of sight.” ~James McNeil Whistler

May the music never stop!

Many years ago I learnt to play the piano under the tutellage of Ms.Hyacinth.

Although it is now difficult to play (or even paint) due to joint pain from illness, I have never completely given up on those gifts.

I find inspiration in the strangest of places to continue.
The magic that happens when I sit down to play or when I add those paint brush strokes to the canvas makes even the last little vibration of sound that emanates from the piano, or that last brush stroke that is placed on that canvas, priceless.

Painting is an outlet that helps me cope with illness.

  • It is a way for me to express what I am feeling in that particular moment or day.
  • I can explore my connection or lack thereof with the disease.
  • I can paint as a way to escape the pain or frustration or any emotion that I may be experiencing that day in connection with the illness
  • Painting helps me take control of my life
